Comments

The only diseases which prevailed to any unusual extent are typhoid fever and pneumonia among blacks who are engaged in railroad work where much exposed to damp and dysentery or diarrhea among children, E. G. Bishop was found dead after being drunk overnight. Y. L. Barnes committed suicide by deliberately blowing his brains out, domestic troubles and perhaps dissipation were no doubt the cause. #29 (not shown) A slave child burnt by its clothes taking fire. #14 (not shown) Creasy, an old negro, partially deranged, rambled off from home and in attempting to cross a large creek fell in and was drowned. #19 (not shown) July , another old negro went to bed well at night and was found dead next morning, her husband though in bed with her did not discover that she was dead until sometime after he rose in the morning. #31 (not shown) An infant one year old was overlaid by its mother, #17 and #18 (not shown) were both probably overlaid or smothered by their mother, and it is rather remarkable the number of infant slaves that are smothered or overlaid by their mothers. #22 J. J. Lowman. This was a remarkable case and he died under circustamstances which induced some of his friends to suppose that he was poisoned by someone who desired to get his property, but after an examination (postmortem) nothing was found to confirm it. The mortality in my division is small in proportion to the population and when those are deducted who have died from accidental or unknown causes it will be seen that the Eastern Division of Barbour Will compare favorably, in general health, with any other portion of our state.
